Changes in Nail Texture – What Does It Mean?

At Protein Formula, we know all too well that changes in nail texture can be demoralising and affect your daily life. We’ve compiled a list of major changes in nail texture and what it could indicate.

BRITTLE NAILS

One of the most common nail problems. This is often caused by repeated wetting and drying of fingernails. It could also be a symptom of a larger issue like iron deficiency or hypothyroidism. We suggest you consult your GP if this is a persistent problem.

WEAK NAILS

Usually defined as nails that bend or break easily. Soft nails can be caused by overexposure to moisture or chemicals like detergent, cleaning fluids and nail polish remover. It can also be a sign that you are overusing a nail treatment that's not right for you. We recommend taking our prescriptive nail quiz to find the right solution for you.

PEELING

Peeling nails tends to be caused by an external trauma to the nail plate, like an injury to the hand or - more often than not - a damaging removal of gel or acrylic extensions. It can be a real cause for concern if your toenails are also peeling. This indicates there could be an internal cause rather than external. Consult your GP if this is the case.

RIDGES

Vertical ridges or waves can appear later in life and tend to run from the free edge of the nail to the cuticle. Not a big cause for concern if they appear alone but appear alongside other health changes, we recommend you seek advice from your GP.
